Starcraft WarSoup Report: Where did 2011 go??.. IT WENT TO E-SPORTS!!!

Hello and welcome to an all new Starcraft Warsoup Report, a break down of the most recent Starcraft 2 news. It has been a while, but now after closing an amazing year 2011 for Starcraft 2, we can look back to some of those great games and moments that open controversy, rivalries and friendships between pro players and fans all over the Starcraft 2 community, as well as take a look at the future for Starcraft 2 and what’s to come on 2012.

After Starcraft 2 was released to the public in July 2010, the game had to prove to be fun and competitive enough to achieve what its successor Starcraft “Brood War” had accomplished in more than ten years of existence. After launch, Starcraft 2 became the best selling PC game of 2010, which made people think in the possibility of a huge future to this long waited sequel of the Starcraft series. Part of the success of Brood War was the competitiveness of it’s gameplay and the community support throughout the years, Brood War still runs strong tournaments all the time, especially in South Korea.

Starcraft 2 was first shown competitively during its beta time when ex-professional Brood War players and casters organized multiple tournaments that weren’t so much about winning prizes, but rather, testing the gameplay, features and tools that Starcraft 2 was bringing to players. Sure enough, the game had a lot to offer to players and spectators of the game.

The first big step in the competitive scene for Starcraft 2 was in Seoul, South Korea when GOMTV announced the Global StarCraft II League (GSL) where the prize pool was none other than $170,000 in cash and from there GOM has offered several tournaments throughout 2010 and 2011 making the Starcraft 2 community grow immensely by bringing fans and professional players to follow the creative strategies from the GSL players.

In 2010 and 2011 in particular showed plenty of tournaments with Starcraft 2 as their main game, the spectator tools and friendly menus built in Starcraft 2 helped immensely to this growth of tournaments in the scene. Tournaments like MLG, IPL, TSL, NASL and many others showed the potential Starcraft 2 has in the world of e-sports.

You can see how Starcraft 2 helped the growth of the competitive scene:

After watching the incredible success of Starcraft 2 in 2011 we can’t predict the future for Starcraft 2, but one thing is for sure.. E-Sports never sleeps!

For this reason you may wonder What the HUK is next!?!

2012 is here, and with that more Starcraft 2 action begins. MLG, IPL and other tournament organizations have to yet show their tournament schedule for 2012, but to start this year we can look at HomeStory Cup IV taking place from January 5th to the 8th.

The story behind this tournament is pretty unique, TakeTV organized this offline event to take place in a studio apartment in Krefeld, Germany, where 32 players battle in a 1v1, Group Stage

Single Elimination Playoffs format, while enjoying some good German beer and BBQ with their fellow pro-gamers. The last Story cup showed an amazing, more relaxed, environment for the players, compared to an MLG or a NASL. One of the factors that brought the viewers attention was the dual casting of MrBitter and RotterdaM featuring some guest commentary from the pro-players who were spectating the matches.

Here is a little preview.

We have an impressive amount of players here, tournament champions even. A few Highlights for HomeStory Cup 4 are:

From team Liquid, the Dreamhack Winter Champion, HerO. He’s an impressive Protoss player with a great display of macro and micro in battles, but something that sets Hero apart from many other Protoss players is the ability to adjust to what his opponent is doing and also create new strategies to encounter attacks.

From team Millenium, the IPL3 Champion, Stephano. This Zerg player showed an outstanding performance at IPL3, Korean players around the world called him a true talent in the Starcraft 2 scene. With an aggressive Zerg style, he can win with flawless five-minute victories, as well as the more long and intense battles against the best players in the world. This French player is no doubt one of the favorites for HomeStory Cup.

From team Old Generations, the two time GSL Champion, MC. Now this particular Protoss player has experienced it all in the Starcraft 2 scene. He won GSL twice, but months after that he started failing hard in his performance, until he started playing in the foreign tournaments like MLG an IPL where he learned a more diverse style of gameplay. MC can show mind blowing games with really interesting decision making and new strategies, but will he be able to pull those strategies against these many great players at HomeStory Cup?

From team Prime, as people call him “the silver champion”, it’s MarineKing. This young Korean Terran player has shown great performance in many tournaments, but unfortunately 2011 wasn’t his year. MaringKing has participated in several GSL finals, but lost all the final matches. Making him the winner of those silver medals. Will 2012 be the year for this methodical Terran player? Well, HomeStory Cup could be the place where he shows his creativity and perfect multitasking.

Lastly, we have some kind of an unknown player for many, but with an impressive run at the Korean Qualifiers for HomeStory Cup we can expect a great performance from this Terran player. From team StarTale, his name is Sound. No much information is out there for this player, but the only thing you need to know is that he demolished a ton of Korean players to participate in the HomeStory Cup, so really the only question here is, how many more players will he defeat at this tournament?

And with that I’d like to extend a big “good luck have fun” in 2012 to all the readers and I personally have to tell you, 2012 will be HUGE for Starcraft 2, not only because the Heart of the Swarm expansion, but the variety of players and tournaments at the moment is insane!

So, go grab a drink, find a Barcraft or simply enjoy all the tournament streams from the comfort of your own computer at home.

Oh and only if you didn’t think E-Sports is big, take a look at DreamHack Winter’s view in the finals.
