Mechwarrior is preparing its triumphant return. PC Gamer has revealed details on an upcoming reboot for the series. To keep the franchise fresh, Piranha Games will be making this version a free to play online game. It is considered a reboot in the franchise and the storyline is about events that occurred even before the first Mechwarrior game.
The game is expected to release in the fall of 2012 but due to legal issues it will only be released on PC. It will be first person only and will see players fighting for territory on multiple planets. A large focus will be placed on team work and players will be able to form their own mercenary squads.
It sounds like it could have some similarities with EVE Online. Personally, I couldn’t enjoy a Mechwarrior game unless I was using a joystick. In today’s gaming world, these are practically obsolete, so it will be interesting to see how they approach the controls.
For those that don’t know, Mechwarrior is a future combat simulator dating back as far as 1989. It is based on the board game known as BattleTech and focuses in on the pilots of the mechanized battle suits, known as BattleMech’s. The last true Mechwarrior game was MechWarrior 4 and came out on Windows PC on November 24th, 2000.
